Honorary Clinical Academics

Honorary Clinical Academic Appointments

Graduate School of Medicine (GSM)

The Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) offers honorary clinical academic appointments for health professionals who are making a significant contribution to the School and hold current unconditional Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration, or registration through a respective national registration agency.

Honorary appointments are unpaid appointments by the University, recognising the contribution of many clinicians to the education offered by the Graduate School of Medicine through this academic title with the University of Wollongong.

Honorary clinical academic appointments can be offered at differing levels, depending on the professional and academic qualifications, experience, and contributions to research and education.

Expected Assessment timeframe

New applications will be reviewed by the Clinical Academic Appointments Panel (CAAP), which meets 4 times per year.

  • Monday, 8 April, 2024
  • Tuesday, 11 June, 2024
  • Wednesday, 11 September, 2024
  • Tuesday, 10 December, 2024

Complete applications must be submitted to gsm-honoraries@uow.edu.au a minimum of 3 weeks prior to the CAAP meeting date.

An applicant will be notified the outcome of assessment of their application within two weeks of the panel meeting.

Key details

Why become an Honorary Clinical Academic?

Honorary clinical academics enjoy all privileges of an academic member of staff and have access to resources and opportunities, as well as receiving an honorary clinical academic title.

Honorary clinical academics can contribute to the University through involvement in the selection and education of future doctors, research and research education of students and contribution to the strategies of the Graduate School of Medicine through participation on committees. Such activities can add to clinicians’ CV for recognition and future clinical roles.

Honorary clinical academics receive the following:

  • Access to University email and intranet.
  • Access to the University’s library, learning centre facilities and online resources.
  • Regular information from the University, Faculty and Graduate School of Medicine.
  • Access to educational and research related resources and supports.
  • Opportunities to contribute to the strategic direction and development processes of the School.
  • Opportunities to participate in UOW collaborative research activities, UOW-hosted educational, cultural, social and professional development activities.
  • Public recognition of your academic affiliation with the University of Wollongong, including a certificate (upon request) outlining your honorary appointment.

Appointments are available at different levels, ranging from Honorary Clinical Tutor to Honorary Clinical Professor. The criteria for appointments are generally consistent with those for standard academic appointments at the University of Wollongong (Academic Staff Position Classification Policy); however, the differing context of clinicians contributing to improvement of clinical practice through education, service to the health service or specialty, are taken into account (See Appendix 1: Criteria for Appointment of Clinical Academic Honorary Title (PDF: 171 KB)).

Honorary clinical appointments are offered for one to 3 years, depending on the level of appointment and the level of contribution made to the Graduate School of Medicine. After that time. A new application process needs to be done to renew the honorary clinical academic title.

Visiting and honorary clinical appointees must use their full title, inclusive of the term “Visiting” or “Honorary” as specified in their letter of invitation for the term of their appointment.
